eBay Group Albums & Firewalls
Can't view eBay Group photo albums? Many people have had problems viewing the eBay Group photo albums without dropping their firewall. eBay staff members have suggested that the solution is simply to drop your firewall. Thanks eBay! While researching a website issue of my own I found the source of the photo album problem and the solution. (Well, it worked for me at least.)
The following are instructions for Norton Internet Security/Norton Personal Firewall 2003 and 2004. Note: Screenshots are from NIS 2003.
For Norton Internet Security/Norton Personal Firewall 2002 and earlier see below.
Norton Internet Security/Norton Personal Firewall 2003-2004
Assuming that you are using one of the default Symantec Internet Security firewall settings

2003
- Open Norton Internet Security.
- Click "Options" > "Internet Security".
2004
- Double-click "Privacy Control".
- Click "Advanced".
(note: "ad blocking" and "spam alert" can be on. I just happened to have them off when I did the screenshot.)

2003
- Click the "Web Content" tab.
- Click "Add Site"
2004
- Click "Add Site"

- Add "groups.ebay.com" and click "OK".
Note: An alternative way to set up your firewall is to set permissions for "ebay.com" instead of "groups.ebay.com". That will solve many of the other problems that people have using the eBay site with a firewall. If you have problems securely logging in to "my eBay" etc. (like I did) then you should probably set permissions for the whole eBay site.

- Click the "groups.ebay.com" site in the site list on the left.
- Uncheck the "Use default settings" checkbox under "Information about visited sites" and click the "permit" option. This should allow your browser to pass referrer information and solve the problem viewing the Group albums.

The Problem:
Here is an explanation of the issue quoted from the Symantec website.
"How Referrer information blocks portions of Web pages:
When you open a Web page that includes graphics, the Web server for that page may use the referrer information to display the graphics. This happens when those graphics are stored on a different Web server than the one you are visiting. In this situation, the first Web server sends a request to the graphics Web server to obtain the graphics. The request includes the referrer information. The referrer information enables the graphics Web server to send the graphics to the correct location.
When you block the referrer information, the graphics Web server cannot send the graphics to the correct location, and you do not see the graphics that your current Web server would normally display."
